2016 Rio Olympics boxing results: Day 6, evening session (August 11)

The sixth day of boxing in Rio has wrapped up. Here’s what we saw in the evening session.

Men’s bantamweight (56kg) – Round of 32

Alberto Melián (Argentina) def. Abdul Omar (Ghana)

• Scores: 29-28, 29-28, 29-28

Melián won all three cards in both of the first two rounds, then Omar took the third across the board, which is fair enough.

Bilel M’hamdi (Tunisia) def. Inkululeko Suntele (Lesotho)

• Scores: 30-25, 30-27, 30-27

Suntele got hurt badly in the first round on a body shot, and never quite recovered from that. He had some physical advantages — taller, longer — but was unable to exploit them, as M’hamdi beat him up on the inside.

Kairat Yeraliyev (Kazakhstan) def. Javid Chalabiyev (Azerbaijan)

• Scores: 28-29, 29-28, 29-28

Despite the split decision, Yeraliyev very clearly won this fight. Giving Chalabiyev the second round was silly, and I think even giving him the third was kinda questionable, because for as many punches as he threw, Yeraliyev was out there like the Kazakh Willie Pep, making him miss constantly. Yeraliyev moves on to face Uzbekistan’s Murodjon Akhmadaliev in the round of 16.

Men’s light welterweight (64kg) – Round of 32

Lorenzo Sotomayor Collazo (Azerbaijan) def. Volodymyr Matviichuk (Ukraine)

• Scores: I missed them (informative!)

Sotomayor, born in Cuba, is tall and lanky, and showed some real style here, sort of a mix of the more arrogant Cuban style we sometimes see, and an arrogant pro style that tends to get pros exposed when they face better competition. Anyway, he won.

Hassan Amzile (France) def. Junius Jonas (Namibia)

• Scores: 29-28, 29-28, 29-28

Jonas, who was detained earlier this week for alleged sexual harassment, had a good first round, but Amzile really took over the fight in the second and third, and made it a clear victory.

Pat McCormack (Great Britain) def. Ablaikhan Zhussupov (Kazakhstan)

• Scores: 30-27, 28-29, 30-27

No real idea how the Vietnamese judge gave two rounds to Zhussupov, but oh well. McCormack showed a lot in this fight, and he’ll need even more in the next round, as he faces Cuba’s Yasniel Toledo, a 2012 bronze medalist at lightweight and 2013 silver/2015 bronze medalist at light welter in the World Amateur Championships.

Men’s welterweight (69kg) – Round of 16

Souleymane Cissokho (France) def. Parviz Baghirov (Azerbaijan)

• Scores: 29-28, 29-28, 29-28

Cissokho was classy in the first round against Imre Bacskai of Hungary, and I wanted to make clear after that fight that Bacskai was not a bad fighter by any means. But if you still had doubts, Cissokho’s win over Parviz Baghirov, a highly-ranked fighter with a first round bye, should end them. Cissokho lost the first round unanimously, but took over in the next two.

Saylom Ardee (Thailand) def. Simeon Chamov (Bulgaria)

• Scores: 29-28, 29-28, 29-28

The fight was up for grabs in the third, with two cards even, and one with Ardee up 2-0. Ardee won the two even cards, and Chamov won the card that had previously gone back to back for Ardee. At any rate, Ardee moves on to face Cissokho in a quarterfinal matchup.

Gabriel Maestre (Venezuela) def. Vincenczo Mangiacapre (Italy)

• Walkover

Mangiacapre is out with a broken jaw.

Daniyar Yeleussinov (Kazakhstan) def. Josh Kelly (Great Britain)

• Scores: 30-27, 30-27, 30-27

Just one of those fights in the Olympics where even a pretty good fighter and good looking prospect like Kelly is well out of his depth against a more experienced, better man in Yeleussinov, who is one of the medal favorites. Kelly gave a good effort all the way, but he couldn’t get it going.

Men’s light heavyweight (81kg) – Round of 16

Teymur Mammadov (Azerbaijan) def. Peter Müllenberg (Netherlands)

• Scores: 29-28, 29-28, 29-28

Mammadov, who moved down from heavyweight, where he won bronze in London, was just too good here for Müllenberg, who gave a spirited effort.

Adilbek Niyazymbetov (Kazakhstan) def. Mikhail Dauhaliavets (Belarus)

• Scores: 30-27, 30-27, 29-28

Niyazymbetov is the man who moves on to face Mammadov. That’s a really intriguing matchup for the quarterfinals.
