That night attendance records were shattered at the Azteca Stadium. Tickets totaled 132, 274 fans who crowded the stadium, but the final total was 136,000, setting the record for the most spectators for a boxing match.
Julio César Chávez fought to retain his super lightweight title of the World Boxing Council, honoring all Mexicans. His opponent Greg Haugen, infuriated Mexican fans with strong statements before the fight. Greg accused Chavez of having topped up his record fighting with Tijuana taxi drivers
Chavez Roared on by his adoring public totally dominated the fight from the first round and it was in the fifth round Referee Joe Cortez stopped the one sided beating declaring it a technical knockout.
