CITY OF NAGA, Cebu (Feb. 25) – Bago City continued its winning ways with four boxers prevailing in Day 1 of the Visayas Quarter Finals of the PSC-Pacquiao Amateur Boxing Cup at the Enan Chiong Activity Center here.
Rodel Gamo, Samuel Manale, Joshua Belicena and Flint Jara scored contrasting wins to advance to the Semi-Finals on March 17 in Calbayog City.
Gamo earned an easy walk-over win over a no-show Justine Quirino of Himamaylan in the Jr. Boys pinweight (44-46 kg.) division while Manale scored a unanimous decision over San Carlos City’s Teodoro Atienza in the light flyweight (48 kg.) category.
Belicena, on the other hand, stopped Escalante’s Novem Magbanua by a referee-stopped-contest in 1:45 of Round 3 in the flyweight (50 kg.) category. Jara escaped with a split decision against Bayawan’s Christian Mark Bughaw in the light bantamweight (52 kg) division.
“Masaya ako dahil walang nagkasakit sa mga bata namin kaya naka handa kaming lumaban sa quarter finals,” said Bago City coach Larry Semillano, a member of the Philippine team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Omega of Mandaue City also advanced with three boxers in the two-day event sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission in coordination with the office of Sen. Manny Pacquiao.

Jim Paul Dignos outclassed Victorias’ Johncy Dolorosa by a unanimous decision in the Jr. Boys light flyweight (48 kg.) while Guadfrey Lubiano pummeled to submission Cebu’s Jake Tabanao by a RSC in 1:45 of Round 3 in the flyweight (50 kg.) category.
Eleven bouts were still being held as of press time.
