ATLANTA — Success has found Israel Adesanya quickly in the UFC.

In just his first 14 months in the organization, “The Last Stylebender” has been a busy man, racking up a 5-0 record en route to earning the interim title shot against Kelvin Gastelum that awaits him at UFC 236. It’s the type of sudden rise that stands in stark contrast to the six-year road Gastelum has taken to reach his opportunity on Saturday — and Gastelum has noticed. Ahead of UFC 236, Gastelum has questioned the résumé of his foe, wondering whether Adesanya has braved the fires of 185 pounds like Gastelum has with his string of performances over Ronaldo SouzaMichael BispingVitor Belfort, and Tim Kennedy.

But Adesanya, who recently scored the best win of his career with a decision over legendary former champion Anderson Silva at UFC 234, thinks Gastelum should probably look in the mirror before he starts critiquing victories over aging legends.

“So someone actually on Instagram kinda pointed out to me that everyone keeps saying, ‘Oh, I fought an old Anderson.’ Anderson’s beaten a lot of the guys [Gastelum]’s beaten when they were younger,” Adesanya said Wednesday at UFC 236 open workouts. “[Gastelum] fought Belfort when he was old, ‘Jacare’ when he was old, Bisping when he was old, (Nate) Marquardt when he was old, and the list goes on. So I don’t know why people aren’t considering that. Like, these guys that he’s dropping, they’re just literally [covering up] and just getting hit. Anderson’s a different kind of beast, so that’s why getting ready for him I felt was harder physically and also a harder fight to deal with than Kelvin.”

Adesanya went on to elaborate on his point that Silva, even the 43-year-old version he faced in February, will be the toughest opponent of his career thus far, not Gastelum.

“For me, that wasn’t about fighting Silva. That was about fighting a younger me,” Adesanya said. “So when I was fighting him, beating him — to the younger me, he was the pinnacle of the sport, so when I beat him, that was like, ‘shit, I’m the best in the world.’ I already knew it but I had to prove it to myself, so now everything else is easy.”

Adesanya, 29, has exceeded expectations thus far in his brief UFC career. His unbeaten 5-0 run includes wins over respected veterans like Silva, Derek Brunson, and Brad Tavares, and his decorated kickboxing background has translated beautifully into an entertaining and elusive MMA striking style.

But despite his busyness in his first 14 months in the company, Adesanya also has never faced an opponent with the type of well-rounded skill set that Gastelum will carry into UFC 236. So after being more than happy to play mind games with past Octagon foes, Adesanya knows those same games would be wasted on the man standing across from him on Saturday simply because Gastelum is a different breed of competitor.

“I don’t have to do shit,” Adesanya said. “Like, example, (Derek) Brunson, I could smell the fear on him. Kelvin’s not scared, he’s dangerous, and that’s what excites me about him. I get to take out a — Mexicans are known for their warrior spirit. He’s got a Mexican style of MMA. So I’m looking to put him on a stake as well.”
