Bantamweight veterans Eddie Wineland and Takeya Mizugaki will fight at UFC on FOX 22 on December 17th.
Sometimes there are certain matchups in MMA that can leave you asking, “This fight hasn’t happened before?” I’d consider this one of those instances.
MMA Fighting confirmed Jason Floyd’s report that Eddie Wineland will face off against Takeya Mizugaki at UFC on FOX 22 on Saturday, December 17th in Sacramento, California. The night’s main card airs live on FOX at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT, with prelims also on FOX at 6 PM ET/3 PM PT.
Wineland (22-11-1) picked up an impressive 3rd round TKO vs. Frankie Saenz at UFC on FOX 20 in Chicago. It was the former WEC bantamweight champion’s first victory since stopping Yves Jabouin in January 2014. Wineland has contemplated retirement in recent years, having suffered back-to-back losses to Johnny Eduardo and Bryan Caraway along the way, but the 32-year-old clearly isn’t finished with the sport just yet.
Mizugaki (21-10-2) was quickly knocked out by Cody Garbrandt at UFC 202, failing to last even 50 seconds into round 1. The Japanese fighter has lost 3 of his last 4, with his only victory coming by unanimous decision vs. George Roop. Mizugaki is a former WEC title challenger who once racked up a five-fight winning streak in the UFC, only for Dominick Cruz to emphatically smash him at UFC 178 in September 2014.
UFC on FOX 22 is headlined by strawweight contenders Paige VanZant and Michelle Waterson. Also on the card is Sage Northcutt vs. Mickey Gall, as well as Urijah Faber’s retirement fight vs. Brad Pickett.
