Demetrius Andrade wants unification fight with Canelo Alvarez

Along with former titleholder Gennadiy Golovkin, WBO middleweight titleholder Demetrius Andrade is one of two guys most likely to face Canelo Alvarez when Alvarez returns on Sept. 14, barring injury or anything like that. Canelo has made clear that he wants to fully unify the 160-pound division, and Andrade’s strap is the only one he hasn’t collected.

Andrade was in attendance at Canelo-Jacobs last night, and unlike Golovkin, he liked the fight. He was also one of the very few who thought Jacobs won.

“I was entertained by the fight, two guys that have a great IQ,” Andrade said on the DAZN post-fight show. “Danny Jacobs, I thought he did what he had to do to pull it off, but I’m not the judge. Canelo definitely came to fight and it was great for boxing.”

Andrade (27-0, 17 KO) returns to the ring on June 29 to face Maciej Sulecki in his second title defense.

“I’ve got Sulecki next, he’s a guy that fought Danny Jacobs, another top guy. I get him out of the way and Canelo should be the guy,” he said.

Asked how he would combat Alvarez, Andrade didn’t give too much away.

“Just be me and don’t get too caught up with what’s going on,” he stated. “One thing I will do is put my jab in his face all night.”

Andrade’s fight with Sulecki will be held in Andrade’s hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, and will be a DAZN main event. While most may not see it as a big fight, it’s huge for Andrade’s career.

“This is my stepping stone to be able to say I want Canelo next.”
