We already know Gervonta Davis is scheduled to return July 27 on Showtime, returning home to Baltimore for a defense of his WBA super featherweight title.

There was talk of it being faded Yuriorkis Gamboa. Instead, it appears it will be mandatory challenger Ricardo Nunez of Panama, as the WBA have ordered the sides to negotiate. Their deadline is June 6, at which point a purse bid will be called. I doubt one will be needed.

Davis (21-0, 20 KO) is coming off of a Feb. 9 first round knockout of late replacement opponent Hugo Ruiz, on a night “Tank” was supposed to face Abner Mares.

Nunez (21-2, 19 KO) has power on his record, and not much else. His best win came last June when he knocked out Elvis Torres in 28 seconds in Mexico, taking the “0” from Torres. Nunez most recently fought on April 30, taking 2:08 to knock out journeyman Eduardo Pacheco, who came into the fight with a record of 22-30-3.

The 25-year-old Nunez is ranked No. 25 in the world by BoxRec, but there’s really nothing substantial at all on his record. His losses came in 2010, when he was disqualified in the third round of his second pro bout, and 2015, when he was knocked out by club fighter Barnie Arguelles, who came in on a two-fight losing streak and has since lost six in a row.

So there you have it, this is probably what we’re getting on July 27, another fantastic Showtime main event in 2019.
