Gennadiy Golovkin is just about a week and a half away from his debut on DAZN on June 8, where he’ll face Steve Rolls in a catchweight fight at 164 pounds, after which it’s expected GGG will try to secure a third fight with Canelo Alvarez.
Golovkin talks about his new training camp, potential opponents, and more.
On what’s new in camp with Johnathon Banks
“It’s everything. Johnathon brings his vision. Abel brought his school. This is very interesting for me, I feel like a student, a teenager. New coach, new teacher coming. Different grade. Wow, this is nice!”
“We haven’t had a lot of time. Three weeks, four weeks? I don’t feel a big difference, like I’m going to change my style. But I feel very comfortable right now, like a bonus.”
On if he wants to knock out Steve Rolls
“Of course, I’ll try! I’ve trained the last three or four weeks, so of course I’ll try. If I can’t — like every opponent, he’s different. If he gives me the chance, I’ll try.”
On if he’s watched a lot of tape on Rolls
“Not a lot. But he’s a professional athlete, he’s a professional boxer. He’s dangerous.”
On calling Canelo-Jacobs a “sparring match”
“It was like good quality sparring. Not a drama show. It was very good quality, but it’s not serious business. … It wasn’t just boring (for me), but for everybody. Listen to the whole stadium. … Both (were boring). … If you’re a real professional, you watch a fight and see if it’s a serious fight or not a serious fight. That was not a serious fight.”
On if Canelo is next in September
“It’s not 100 percent, but it’s possible. … Nobody knows. If I feel good after this fight, if I win, why not?”
On what he can do new against Canelo
“Every fight is different. I have a new situation, he has good experience. Every fight is different.”
On whether Canelo has gotten better
“I’ve had two fights with him, both were different. I don’t feel like he’s gotten more power or speed, he’s stayed the same.”
On WBO titleholder Demetrius Andrade
“We’re not going to have anybody particular on our list. Anybody who wants to fight, we’ll consider.”
On Billy Joe Saunders saying he had a fight signed with Golovkin
“Why talk about Saunders? There’s a number of people who can fight. If somebody wants to fight, we’ll consider them. … They should all line up. Form a line.”
