Roc Nation executive Michael Yormark is hopeful that showdown between light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward will do good pay-per-view numbers, despite neither fighter being a proven attraction on that front.

Yormark tells RingTV that he anticipates Kovalev-Ward to be the biggest PPV of the year, but in order for that to happen the fight would have eclipse the 600,000 buy mark posted by the Canelo-Khan fight in May.

“We’re very optimistic about the pay-per-view numbers,” Yormark said on a conference call. “We’ve got two great fighters. This is a 50-50 fight, the biggest fight of the year and arguably on paper the biggest fight of the last decade. So we would be very disappointed if it wasn’t the biggest pay-per-view fight of 2016.”

There certainly has appeared to have be PPV fatigue in boxing — particularly since Mayweather-Pacquiao last year — but there were signs of dissipating interest even before that took place.

What almost certainly won’t be questioned is that the fight between Kovalev and Ward pits two of the very best fighters in the world in against one another, with the winner likely to sit atop pound-for-pound rankings. Fights like this don’t come along very often, but does that in and of itself make it Kovalev-Ward a worth PPV event?
