Felicia Spencer, Megan Anderson make cases for shot at Amanda Nunes

Felicia Spencer and Megan Anderson both believe they have good cases for the next UFC featherweight title shot.

As for who wants it more, that’s a question up for debate. After winning their respective fights at UFC Norfolk, the featherweight contenders argued why they should be next.

For Spencer, who stopped Zarah Fairn dos Santos in the co-headliner, a previous win over Anderson might be the strongest point in favor of advancement.

”I didn’t get to see Megan’s performance; I heard it was really great,” she said. “But I think I put myself in a great position to get a shot. I just need to have a conversation with the UFC. It all comes down to that conversation we’ll have, I’m guessing, pretty soon.”

Spencer’s career has moved at lightning speed since her UFC debut this past July against Cris Cyborg. And while she wasn’t able to get the job done against the all-time great, she impressed the MMA world with her resilience.

So Spencer isn’t too concerned with being rushed toward another daunting opponent. Asked about a date at UFC 250, Spencer said, “that definitely could happen.”

”It’s kind of exciting, the idea of potentially fighting two legends within one year would be awesome,” he said. “Being able to fight Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes, that would be awesome.”

For Anderson, who knocked out Norma Dumont, the resume is the ticket. The Aussie has won her previous two fights, doubling Spencer’s number.

”I’m the only one that’s on a win streak,” she said. “I feel like I put my name on the list, partcularly with such a great knockout. If they give it to Felicia, I think she’s an incredible competitors, and I wouldn’t be surprised. If they give it to her, I would love to fight again.”

Anderson couched her title aspirations in the reality of all UFC contenders, which is that wins and losses – and how many of them you have – is not the be-all for deciding who gets to fight for a title.

”I feel yes, but look at Leon Edwards,” she said. “He’s on an incredible win streak and he still hasn’t gotten a title shot yet. Feeling like you’ve put in the work and the time doesn’t necessarily equate to a title shot these days. All I can control is putting on great performances. If I do get the title shot, I’m game as f*ck. But if not, I’m still going to fight and keep racking up those wins until I do get the title shot.”

Anderson already has a name in mind if things don’t go her way.

”I would love to fight (Germaine de Randamie) if she would like to come back up to 145,” she said. “I think that would be a great striking battle, because I think she’s a phenomenal competitor.”

It sounds like two-division UFC champion Amanda Nunes will stay out the fray altogether. On social medial, she was positive toward both opponents and left the choice to UFC President Dana White.
