Golden Boy Promotions is trying to put together a return for super featherweight titleholder Francisco Vargas, who would be back on HBO on January 28 if things work out.
Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KO) is coming off of a majority draw against Orlando Salido on June 4, a fight that left him with cuts that required a lengthy break from action. He won the WBC title in November 2015, in his Fight of the Year instant classic against Takashi Miura.
Golden Boy’s Eric Gomez tells ESPN.com that he’s “moving 100 miles per hour to get something done,” and that though it would not be the January bout, he also says that their team would be open to a possible fight with Vasyl Lomachenko:
“Francisco Vargas is willing to fight anyone. Vargas has some pretty good fights in front of him, whether it’s Lomachenko or a rematch with Salido or a rematch with Miura. They would be very good fights and they would sell.”
As of now, the WBC’s top 15 contenders are Miura, Mickey Roman, Tevin Farmer, Salido, Jhonny Gonzalez, Javier Fortuna, Andres Gutierrez, Kenichi Ogawa, Eduardo Hernandez, Martin J. Ward, Alberto Mercado, Juli Giner, Edner Cherry, Masayuki Ito, and Juan Manuel Lopez. There are some interesting matchups in there, and a fight with Mickey Roman could be a real war.
