CONTROVERSIAL: KAMBOSOS WINS MAJORITY DECISION OVER HUGHES.
In a very controversial, unrealistic decision, George Kambosos Jr. decisioned and dethroned Briton Maxi Hughes tonight on ESPN +.
With the rather undeserved win, Kambosos (21-2, 10 KO’s), a former sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao, becomes the new IBO Lightweight World Champion.
On the ring, the southpaw Hughes seemed to have edged the win with superior boxing skills, body shots and effective footwork.
However, undeserving scores were 117-111, 115-113 and 114-114 in favor of the Aussie Kambosos Jr.
With its loud boos, fans in attendance at the Firelake Arena in Shawnee, Oklahoma, seemed to clearly side in favor Maxi Hughes (26-6-2, 5 KO’s), who apparently had done enough to claim the win. But got denied.
During the post-fight interview, Kambosos made it clear that he is not interested in a rematch, with Hughes, but it was Hughes the one who got the fan’s cheers and applauses.
Hall-of-famer former champ Timothy Bradly, analyzing for ESPN+, expressed his belief that Hughes should have been awarded the win.
Also, unbeaten former world champ Shakur Stevenson (20-0, 10 KO’s), watching from ringside, said on ESPN+:
“I thought Hughes was the better fighter.”
