Toronto was home to a fantastic night of fights, with four (T)KO’s, two submissions and six decisions (including two split decisions). Here’s who managed to walk away $50,000 richer:

Performances of the Night: Lando Vannata and Max Holloway

Lando Calrissian Vannata burst onto the UFC scene by almost upsetting Lightweight title contender Tony Ferguson this past July. His second UFC fight saw him face another awkward fighter in John Makdessi, and Vannata took the opportunity to prove himself, and this time, it wasn’t a short notice fight. “Full Camp” Lando may not be able to do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, but he can throw some out-of-this-world spinning shit, and he launched a spinning wheel kick with enough force to make Makdessi topple like an AT AT, earning himself $50,000 and the pink slip to the Millennium Falcon.

Anthony Pettis missed weight for his bout against Max Holloway, and “Blessed” made him pay for it. Pettis’ decision to use the controversial Lou Giordano instead of a proven weight-cut specialist like George Lockhart or Mike Dolce seemed to backfire, as Pettis visibly tired early. Then, to add insult to injury, Pettis broke his hand as well.

Pettis was right on the edge of competitive in round one, but Holloway started pulling away in the second with a well rounded array of techniques that continued in the third round, and just before the bell, Holloway finished with a flurry that saw Pettis turtle up in a crouch before the referee stepped in to save him. Holloway called out Jose (W)Aldo in his post-fight interview with Rogan, then demanded UFC president Dana White give him a bonus for being the first person to finish Pettis, and the bossman complied.

Fight of the Night Cub Swanson vs. Dooho Choi

Wow. This was the ultimate brawler versus technician battle and everybody won. Cub swung for the fences like it was the World Series all over again, and Choi ate every single shot and returned fire with laser-guided straights and jabs to the jaw. This fight was great two minutes into round one. It was incredible by the end of round two, and round three opened up with over 20 punches exchanged in the first 30 seconds.

Swanson set a hellacious pace and put everything he had into every shot. At 2:30 Cub got Choi against the cage and landed five or six huge, winging punches on the skull of Choi. Something had to give, either Cub’s gas tank or Choi’s chin; yet incredibly, neither did. Choi took everything Swanson had to offer, and every time Cub looked done, every time his hands dropped and his chest heaved, he would somehow find the energy to throw fastball after fastball onto Choi’s chin. Joe Rogan summed it up best when he said, “What a crazy fight, and what a treat to call it.” Both guys earned themselves $50,000 and the eternal respect and admiration of everyone who witnessed the bout. Forget fight of the night, this might be fight of the year.
