Fresh off his first professional defeat at the hands of Felix Diaz over the summer, Sammy Vasquez Jr. (21-1, 15 KOs) is reportedly set to take on Luis Collazo (36-7, 19 KOs) on Feb. 2, his trainer tells RingTV. No venue or television network has been mentioned at this time.

Vasquez, 30, a welterweight southpaw will take on another lefty gatekeeper in Collazo, 35, who hasn’t fought since getting stopped by Keith Thurman over a year ago. Vasquez and Collazo had been lined up to fight this past July, but that fight got scrapped after Collazo pulled out with a calf injury which paved an opening or Felix Diaz to fill his spot.

Vasquez’s trainer, Charles Leverette, expects a win over Collazo to put Vasquez in a position to vie for a world title, even though Collazo appears to be almost completely spent these days.

“Everybody else has fought Collazo and went on to fight for world titles,” Leverette said in a phone interview. “That’s what I’m hoping. He had a mishap in his last fight but I’m hoping it goes like it went for all his other fights and he gets some other opportunities.”
