Check out the results of the three Fight Pass preliminary card bouts that happened at UFC on FOX 22 in Sacramento, California.
The first two fights at UFC on FOX 22 went the distance, but the Fight Pass feature bout was capped off by another knockout win for former WEC bantamweight champion Eddie Wineland. Here’s how those fights played out.
Eddie Wineland def. Takeya Mizugaki via TKO (punches) at 3:04 of Round 1 – Bantamweights
Mizugaki’s boxing looked very good in the early going, timing Wineland with the jab and a crisp right hand. At the midway point of the 1st, Wineland scored with a nice uppercut on the inside. Both men were very willing to stand and trade. Unfortunately for Mizugaki, Wineland hits harder, and Eddie dropped Mizugaki with a big right hand. Wineland searched for the finish, and when Mizugaki got back to his feet he was stumbling backwards, and Wineland knocked him down with another right hand. The referee had seen enough, and Wineland secured himself his 2nd knockout win in as many fights. Mizugaki has now been knocked out 3 times in his last 5 fights.
Hector Sandoval def. Fredy Serrano via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27) – Flyweights
Sandoval took the former Olympic wrestler Serrano down early, and later punished him with big strikes against the fence. A right hand to the temple appeared to rock Serrano, but the Colombian clinched up Sandoval to buy some time. Serrano threw axes kicks and front kicks, but neither connected. It was a one-sided round 1 for Sandoval. He outstruck Serrano soundly and didn’t let Serrano take him down once.
Sandoval countered a kick by Serrano and landed another big shot that had Serrano hurt. The Team Alpha Male product went for a guillotine choke, but Serrano escaped. Serrano dug in to Sandoval’s body with kicks, but Sandoval was more accurate with his hands. He drilled Sandoval with a hard right hand after he was on the receiving end of a leg kick that made him switch stances. Sandoval started round 3 with a double-leg takedown, which he completed, then attacked Serrano’s neck. Serrano soon returned to his feet, but clearly two rounds down. Sandoval ducked under a wheel kick and had control of Serrano’s back, and threw a couple of short punches before Serrano fired back a spinning backfist. The patient approach to Sandoval’s game, particularly with his counterstriking, consistently gave Serrano problems. Serrano kept up his offense through leg and body kicks, and arguably won him round 3, but Sandoval was the deserved winner, and it’s his first win in the UFC. Serrano sees himself on a two-fight losing skid.
Sultan Aliev def. Bojan Velickovic by split decision (28-29, 30-27, 30-27) – Welterweights
The first 3 minutes of round 1 were fairly uneventful, with both men not throwing many strikes. Velickovic perhaps had the slight advantage through his kicks. Aliev took “Serbian Steel” down and defended Velickovic’s armbar and triangle attempts. Velickovic got hit with some good ground-and-pound, then ate several shots on his way back up before the round ended. In round 2, Velickovic landed a good, sharp left hand on Aliev but found himself taken down again. Sultan wasn’t landing many damaging blows (while Velickovic clap-boxed Aliev’s ears), but maintained superior control. Velickovic returned to his feet, only to be reintroduced to the mat. A weak guillotine attempt was easily fended off by Aliev. Velickovic’s late triangle-armbar attempt also was unsuccessful. Aliev was cut above the left eye due to an accidental clash of heads before his inside trip of Velickovic. It was Velickovic going for the takedown in round 3, but Aliev defended nicely and had a takedown attempt of his own. Velickovic reversed him and took Aliev’s back, but was too high and Aliev shook him off, and once again wound up on top. Aliev really won this fight based more off of control than actual sustained offense, and it was a horribly dull contest to witness. This is Aliev’s first win inside the Octagon, while Velickovic is now 1-2 in the UFC.
