With Tony Bellew occupied by his upcoming showdown with David Haye, the WBC officially ordered mandatory challenger Mairis Briedis and number-two-contender Marco Huck to fight for the interim title. The two are reportedly looking at either March 18th or April 1st, with the latter more likely to allow Huck time to heal his hand.

Briedis had previously made contact with Huck in November; while the WBC allowed Bellew to keep his title for the Haye fight in their annual convention, “Bomber” will have to face the winner of this match as part of the deal.

Bellew vs. Haye is the more viscerally appealing fight, both fighters being, in the English parlance, knob’eads, but Briedis-Huck is a far more interesting stylistic clash. Briedis (21-0, 18 KO) has monster power and solid skills to back it up, while Huck (40-3-1, 27 KO) is, in the most complimentary sense of the term, an utter bastard in the ring.

Sheer force versus grit and foul play is always a fun watch. Here’s hoping they actually put this one together and inflict the winner upon Bellew.
