World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaimán, shared precious childhood memories with a man who is small in physical stature, but has the fighting spirit of a giant…none other than former light flyweight champion Germán Torres.

Mauricio fondly recalled how Germán took him to train at the gym. German, who made his debut on March 24, 1976, in the Arena Coliseo against Jesus Pascasio, who he TKO’d in six rounds, was a fighter who never surrendered.

After five attempts he was able to conquer the WBC light flyweight championship on December 11, 1988 In South Korea, when he defeated Soon-Jung Kang by unanimous decision for the vacant WBC title.

“I remember very well, when Germán traveled to the fight. He was excited, knowing that this time he would indeed bring home the title. He deserved it and he worked so hard to earn it. When I found out who won I felt happy. However, I never imagined what would happened, as the brand new champion came to my house and gave me the green and gold belt with a beautiful dedication.

“I was a boy and I was so happy to have the belt in my hands, even more so, as it came from one of my idols, but when I told my parents, they told me I had to return it. I remember they called German and they invited him home, so I could give him his belt, but he did not want to and he stressed it was a gift. This was truly an unforgettable moment, which I forever carry in my heart. Thank you Champion! “-Mauricio Sulaimán-

What goes around, comes around! Mauricio invited German Torres to the weekly WBC press conference, to be presented with a new green belt and gold, in replacement of the one he won many years ago. It was such a poignant moment!
