Two fighters received indefinite medical suspensions in the aftermath of Bellator 170, including one fighter that was given the lengthy sentence due to an “unreported stab wound,” according to information released by the California State Athletic Commission to MMA Fighting on Wednesday.
Welterweight fighter Christian Gonzalez was the recipient of the unusual suspension following his second-round loss to Daniel Rodriguez on the event’s preliminary card. He, along with Brennan Ward — who suffered a brutal knockout in Bellator 170’s co-main event — will be required to seek medical and commission clearance before being allowed to return to active competition.
In addition to Gonzalez and Ward, four other fighters received lengthy medical suspensions for potential injuries sustained during the event: Derek Anderson (180 days, front tooth), Jamar Ocampo (180 days, jaw and rib pain), Rob Gooch (180 days, left wrist), and Jack May (right forearm).
Bellator 170 took place on Jan. 21 at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Tito Ortiz defeated Chael Sonnen via first-round submission in the night’s main event, which aired live on Spike TV.
