Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans is scheduled to make his middleweight debut against four-time Australian Olympian Daniel Kelly.
Following two instances of athletic commissions denying him a license to fight, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans is cleared to resume competing, and it looks as if he’ll be making his middleweight debut on March 4th. ESPN and MMA Fighting both reported that Evans will face Daniel Kelly at UFC 209 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Evans (19-5-1) last fought in April 2016, losing by first-round KO to Glover Teixeira in the UFC on FOX 19 main event. It marked his fourth loss in six fights, as well as just the second stoppage defeat of his career. He was scheduled to face the now-retired Tim Kennedy at UFC 205, but was pulled from the event due to irregular findings in a pre-fight MRI exam. When the same fight was booked for UFC 206, he was denied a license by Ontario’s AC for the same reason.
Kelly (12-1) has won three straight inside the Octagon, most recently defeating Chris Camozzi by unanimous decision at UFC Melbourne in November. The Australian judoka also scored a stoppage win vs. Antonio Carlos Junior, and a decision nod vs. Steve Montgomery. His only loss in the UFC was a quick TKO vs. Sam Alvey. This upcoming fight with Evans will mark the 39-year-old’s second fight outside of Australia in his entire MMA career.
UFC 209 is topped by a pair of title fights, as welterweight champion Tyron Woodleyrematches Stephen Thompson in the main event, while Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will battle for the interim lightweight strap.
