Sky Sports reports today that a likely May matchup for the vacant WBC super middleweight title between Callum Smith and former titleholder Anthony Dirrell could be headed to Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC.

The belt was recently vacated by Badou Jack, who plans to move to light heavyweight following his draw with James DeGale on January 14.

Smith (22-0, 17 KO) is the current European and British super middleweight champion, last fighting on December 10, an easy win over Luke Blackledge. Dirrell (30-1-1, 24 KO) was in action on January 13, routinely beating Norbert Nemesapati, a past Smith victim, too.

The fight will go to the United Kingdom if Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing win a purse bid. If not, it would likely be staged in the United States. Dirrell is managed by Al Haymon and fights under the Premier Boxing Champions banner, but it’s a guess as to how much they’d be willing to spend on the fight, whereas Hearn and Matchroom can afford to spend more, as they’ll draw more and get a good TV deal.
