Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson met back in December 2011, in one of the most controversial fights in recent history, with Peterson winning a hugely debated split decision in his hometown of Washington, DC.

It was a fight that featured a questionable performance by referee Joe Cooper, a mysterious man in a red hat, and to top it all off, Peterson later testing positive for testosterone in 2012, adding another layer to the whole thing well after the fact.

But could they do it again? Peterson won the WBA “world” welterweight title tonight from David Avanesyan, and Khan wasted no time tweeting that he’d “love” a rematch with his former foe:

Khan has recently negotiated with Kell Brook, once again fruitlessly, and has been out of the ring since a predictable knockout loss to Canelo Alvarez in May 2016. He’s 30 now, and there doesn’t seem to be much he can do in boxing that he hasn’t already done, but after world titles at 135 and 140, he hasn’t picked up one at 147 (he held the WBC’s “silver” title, but nobody counts that), and a Peterson rematch would give him that opportunity.
