By Scott Gilfoid: Peter Fury, the trainer for Hughie Fury, says that he WILL be signing the contract for the fight against WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker as soon as they get the contract from him to sign.
Earlier on Thursday, the World Boxing Organization president Paco Valcarcel said that if Hughie doesn’t sign the contract by 12 p.m. on Friday, the WBO will possibly have Parker take a voluntary defense of his title.
Hughie (20-0, 10 KOs) and Parker (22-0, 18 KOs) are supposed to be facing each other on April 1 in Auckland, New Zealand. But that’s only if the contract gets signed by both fighters.
”Contract for Hughie Fury will be signed tomorrow once we have it back to sign from D_Higgins_Duco. Bear in mind, we’re working on a 13 hour time difference,” said Peter Fury on his Twitter.
So the reason why Hughie hasn’t signed the contract is because he doesn’t have it? Oh boy. Why would the WBO president bother posting a Tweet if Hughie doesn’t even have the contract yet? That doesn’t make sense at all.
Here’s what the WBO president Paco Valcarcel said on his Twitter today:
“If Hughie Fury doesn’t sign before 12pm UK time tomorrow, WBO as requested will consider sanctioning a voluntary for Joe Parker,” said Valcarcel.
Hughie, 22, needs to sign the contract because you never know if he ever gets another chance at fighting for a world title. Hughie had the chance of fighting WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in 2015, but he didn’t take the fight. Of course, Hughie’s unbeaten record and him being related to Tyson Fury obviously helped him get the fight offer. That’s not likely going to keep happening if Hughie gets beaten by someone.
Thus far, Hughie still hasn’t fought anyone good. Hughie fought high level journeyman Fred Kassi last April in a fight that was stopped in the 7th round due to Hughie suffering a cut over his left eye from a clash of heads. The fight went to the scorecards and Hughie won by the scores 69-66, 70-64 and 69-65. Hughie definitely was ahead at the time of the ending of the fight, but he looked totally exhausted.
Hughie was starting to get nailed by Kassi with big shots. It looked to me like Kassi was on his way to possibly knocking out Hughie if not for the head-butt. It was an interesting clash of heads, as Hughie was totally gassed out and holding onto Kassi as if he were trying to stay afloat. I think Hughie would have lost that fight if not for the clash of heads. I hope for Hughie’s sake that he works on his stamina in the little time that he has left before facing Parker on April 1.
