THE World Series of Fighting (WSOF), one of the US biggest mixed martial arts promotion based in Las Vegas, Nevada has authorized international promoter Brico Santig to represent WSOF Global Championship here in the Philippines.
The agreement between Santig and WSOF-GC represented by its Vice-President for Operations Jason Lilly was made at the office of Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Ramon Guanzon last week in Makati.
“WSOF’s ultimate mission is to bring together the best athletes from countries and organizations across the world to compete for a true globally-recognized world champion,” said Lilly.
WSOF is making its first-ever event in the Philippines dubbed as WSOF-GC3 on July 30 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum featuring a heavyweight championship in the main event between defending champion Evgeny Erokhin of Russia and no. 1 contender Richard Odoms of USA.
It will also feature the selected fighters from the Philippines against the opponents from other different countries.
“This is a chance for our Filipino MMA fighters to explore internationally most especially our very own Jujeath (Bad Girl) Nagaowa, who is given a break,” said Santig, who also promotes MMA and is a former president of World Muaythai Federation Philippines.
Santig, promoter-manager-matchmaker of the Benguet-based Highland Boxing Promotions, was conferred the 2015 Promoter of the Year award by the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) during its convention in Bacolod City last March 30.
Two days later, the World Boxing Council-Asia awarded him the 2015 Promoter of the Year in the Asia Pacific Region for the fourth consecutive time in a ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand.
Nagaowa, who has an MMA record of 2-0 win-loss card, is a former professional boxer under Santig’s Highland Stable in Benguet. Nagaowa will be fighting Malaysia’s Audreylaura “Ice Comet” Boniface (1-0) in the 105 lbs. division.
WSOF’s live events and competitions have been shown on the NBC Sports Network in the United States, TSN2 in Canada and on Esporte Interativo in Brazil.
WSOF uses a ten-sided (Decagon) cage for their events, unlike the UFC’s eight-sided octagon. It also uses the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts implemented by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
