As Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. prepares to take on Canelo Alvarez this May under the tutelage of respected trainer Nacho Beristain, the trainer talks to ESPN Deportes about what he has planned for Jr. in this camp.
Beristain begins by mentioning that he plans on having Jr. spar about 120 rounds during camp and hopes to see improvement in Jr’s defensive capabilities.
“Today [Chavez Jr] worked six rounds of boxing school, and on Tuesday begins to [spar]. Hopefully from here to the fight does not more than 120 rounds, at most, I do not usually that my fighters do more of that,” said Beristain.
“What happens is that we need a lot of reps, especially on the defensive end…” he continued.
Beristain obviously doesn’t want his fighter to take on all incoming fire from Canelo and plans to avoid that as much as possible. He also goes on to say that he’s not concerned about Chavez Jr’s weight and that he’s confident that he’ll be able to meet the contracted limit of 164.5lbs so long as he sticks to his diet and training regiment.
