It looks like the UFC has a next fight for Alistair Overeem coming off his win over Mark Hunt, and it’s against a very familiar foe.
It’s time for the trilogy bout we’ve all been waiting for. No, not Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson 3. Nor, Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao 3. It’s time for Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum 3. Reportedly, at least.
Fox Sports sources confirm a FloCombat report that the UFC is currently working on a heavyweight rubber-match for their July 8th PPV card. While it seems no contracts have been signed, and no official announcements have been made, the two heavyweights appear to be on course to hit the third chapter of their decade long rivalry.
Overeem and Werdum first fought back in Pride FC. The Brazilian submitted the ‘Demolition Man’ with a Kimura in the second round as part of the first leg of the 2006 Open-Weight Grand Prix. They would meet again five years later under the Strikeforce banner in Dallas, Texas. This time, Overeem (now ‘The Reem’) took home a unanimous decision victory in what was widely regarded as something of a clunker of a fight. Werdum spent most of the match pulling guard, while Overeem was content to wait for the ref to stand him back up.
Another 6 years will have passed by the time they meet again. Werdum has gained and lost the UFC heavyweight title, and Overeem has switched up his style from bullying in-fighter to stick & move pot shot artist. But, Werdum’s approach has changed as well over the last few years, with a new found confidence in his muay thai striking – sometimes to a fault.
Werdum will enter the bout having not fought since taking a unanimous decision win over Travis Browne back at UFC 203 in September of last year. For Overeem, this fight will mark a much quicker return to action. The Dutch heavyweight is fresh off a KO of Mark Hunt at UFC 209 earlier this month. At the moment, no other bouts have been announced for the UFC 213 card, which will cap the UFC’s International Fight Week, but stay tuned to Bloody Elbow for more news and updates.
