Many have wondered what Robbie Lawler’s next move was going to be after losing his UFC welterweight title last year. He was tied to bouts with guys like Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre, but those never came together. Instead, with a full year off, he will meet the always-exciting Donald Cerrone at UFC 213 in July.
Brett Okamoto of ESPN tweeted the news (which he got directly from UFC president Dana White):
Lawler (27-11, 1 NC, 12-5 UFC) won the 170-pound title in 2014 and defended it successfully three times (all were crazy wars) before getting knocked out by Tyron Woodley in the first round at UFC 201.
Cerrone (32-8, 1 NC, 19-5 UFC) had won four bouts in a row since moving up to 170, all by stoppage, but was finished by Jorge Masvidal in the second round of their UFC on Fox bout in January.
No other bouts have been announced for UFC 213 yet, which takes place in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be the third in three days for the promotion during Internnational Fight Week.
