Tonight’s main event will see Daniel Cormier defending his UFC light heavyweight title against heavy hitter Anthony Johnson. The co-main will see former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman taking on former Strikeforce 205-pound champ Gegard Mousasi.
This portion of the play-by-play covers the preliminary card. The featured bout comes in the lightweight division, with Gregor Gillespie meeting Andrew Holbrook.
The prelims kick off at 6;30pm ET/3:30pm PT with four bouts on UFC Fight Pass. They then move over to Fox Sports 1 at 8pm ET/5pm PT for the other four prelims bouts. The five-fight PPV kicks off at the normal starting time of 10pm ET/7pm PT, which we’ll cover in a separate post. The full lineup and schedule follows. Mike De La Torre vs. Myles Jury
Round 1 – De La Torre leads with a straight right. Jury gets a takedown. He looks for a choke, then takes the back with a body triangle. De La Torre isn’t likely to go anywhere. He’s landing a few punches to soften him up. He flattened him out and is opening up with punches. Hard rights to the face. De La Torres is cut up. Jury looking for an arm triangle. He gives it up and drops huge elbows. Total domination. More punches. The ref finally stops it.

Sean Strickland vs. Kamaru Usman
Round 1 – Usman with a jab to the body. Strickland with a straight left. Usman scoops a single and lands some knees to the body. Usman with a knee to the head and a bunch of knees to the butt. Usman unable to get Strickland down past one knee but he’s in control. Now he finally gets him to the floor but Strickland goes for a leg lock. A few punches from Usman. More now. Strickland has a cut over his eye. 10-9 Usman.
Round 2 – Strickland jabbing. He’s having trouble seeing out of his eye. Usman lands two big rights. Inside leg kick and Usman looks for a takedown. Footstomp from Usman. Strickland barely throwing anything now. Usman drops him with a right hook! Strickland holding on for dear life. Usman landing elbows to the damaged eye. Strickland looked for a leg lock. Usman worked from top position. Strickland looks for an armbar and rolls through, but Usman stays on top. Front headlock. Strickland gets up with 30 seconds to go. Usman with a hard outside leg kick. 10-8 Usman.
Round 3 – Usman goes to the body. He scores with three or four punches as he walks Strickland down. Once again, Strickland isn’t really throwing anything. Usman gets a takedown against the cage. Big hammerfists. Strickland is completely stacked up against the cage. Usman punches him in the ass. Strickland back to his feet with 2:10 to go. He’s just on his bike. Usman with an overhand right to the damaged eye. He’s looking or the finish, really trying to open up. Strickland is finally throwing punches. A right lands for Usman again, and he goes to the body. Strickland lands two shots. They brawl to the horn. 10-9 and 30-26 Usman.

Round 1 – Outside leg kick from Rosa. Fancy switch kick to the outside and inside of the lead leg. Burgos with a left hook that sends Rosa staggering. He lands two counter lefts. Rosa looking for spinning attacks. Leg kicks again. Burgos with his hands down, just headhunting. Nice combo from Burgos. Jab as well. More low kicks from Rosa. They trade rights. Rosa really eating up the front leg but Burgos isn’t showing any signs of wear. Low kick from Rosa. Aaaaand that one was hard. Big combo from Burgo on the restart. Burgos throws him down but doesn’t follow him to the mat. Rosa has a takedown attempt stuffed. Body shot from Burgos after a litany of kicks from Rosa. 10-9 Burgos.
Round 2 – Jab from Burgos. Rosa with a shot and he gets Burgos down for a second but he’s right back up. Rosa settles for some cage work. They trade knees and break. Spinning back kick to the body for Rosa, and two outside leg kicks. Rosa wound up big and landed a left. Burgos stuffs a shot. Rosa wit ha nice jab. Burgos responds with a right and his own leg kick. Rosa with a straight left and a switch kick. They trade jabs. Rosa with a winging right. A low kick stumbles Burgos. He lands a left. Burgos is missing a lot now. Nice jab from Burgos. Rosa lands a spinning back fist. 10-9 Rosa.
Round 3 – Burgos with a few kicks and a right hook. Rosa caught a kick but couldn’t do anything with it. Rosa grabbed a single but ate a few shots. Front kick from Burgos, and a body shot. Burgos with a monster right hook that floors Rosa! Huge lying knee! Another big shot stumbles him! He goes down to one knee and the ref jumps in to stop it. Rosa is very unhappy.

Jan Blachowicz vs. Patrick Cummins
Round 1 – Nice combination from Blachowicz and Cummins is down! He ate some shots on the ground but got back up. He looked to have knocked Blachowicz down but it may have been a slip. He looked for an anaconda but couldn’t hold it. Blachowicz lands a bunch again on the feet and Cummins is wobbled again. He’s landed three uppercuts and hurt him every time. They’re clinched up. Cummins’ face is cut up. Blachowicz stuffed a shot. Another lead uppercut. A hard left hook wobbled Cummins again but he didn’t go down. In fact, he chained some attempts together and got a nice takedown. Blachowicz used a triangle attempt to get back up. 10-8 Blachowicz.
Round 2 – Blachowicz lands a combo and a big body kick. Cummins looks for a takedown against the cage but couldn’t get it. Cummins with a straight right and a takedown. Cummins with a few shots. He stepped out of guard as Blachowicz attempted an armbar.Cummins jumped back in an almost got caught in a kimura. He landed a couple of big shots to make him give it up though. Blachowicz got back up with 90 seconds to go. Another brief takedown. They jostle in the clinch. Blachowicz with the uppercut and a high kick. Blachowicz looks very gassed all of a sudden. Blachowicz went for a takedown, and just ate punches to the ribs. 10-9 Cummins.
Round 3 – Cummins charges in with some punches. Double jab from Cummins. He ducked a right and got a nice takedown. Blachowicz comes over for an armbar, but Cummins defends. He took his time, and kept using a can opener, but he’s opening up with punches now. Blachowicz looke for an armbar and got back up with two minutes to go. He threw a flying knee and some hard kicks. Cummins got a front headlock and lands a bunch of knees to the head. Now he moves on top and drops elbows. Body shots. Blachowicz is pressed against the cage and can’t do anything. I’ll go 10-8 Cummins and the rare 28-27 score.

Gregor Gillespie vs. Andrew Holbrook
Round 1 – Gillespie with a nice kick. He drops Holbrook with a combo immediately. Ground and pound and it’s over just like that! It was a left hook that put him on his butt.

Round 1 – Emmett with an outside leg kick. Lots of feinting. Green witth a combo, finally. Emmett with a overhand right. Scored with another. Body kick from Emmett. Step-in straight right from Green. Hard kick to the cup. Cornuts cam – yup. It connected. Green only needs a few seconds to recover though. Emmett scores with a right hook. Green still looking for his range. Nice combo by Emmett. Outside leg kick from Emmett. Green landed a hard counter that wobbled Emmett briefly. Nice counter combo from Green. Emmett with a nice shot himself though. 10-9 Emmett.
Round 2 – Green catches a kick. He landed a hard jab. Emmett with a right hook that lands glancingly. Green chases him down with a kick. Emmett cracks him with a right. Body kick from Green. Green goes back to the jab. Counter right from Green, and he stuffs a takedown attempt. Green with a body kick and a right. Green dictating the pace now. The right finds a home for Emmett again. Green with a hard left as Emmett looks to circle away. He’s bringing pressure now. Body kick from Green. Emmett firing late. 10-9 Green.
Round 3 – Emmett with a right. Green with a takedown. Emmett looked for a leg lock but there wasn’t anything there. Green with some rights as Emmett looks for something from the bottom. Emmett pushed off and gets up. They collided heads. Green with an uppercut that wobbles Emmett. Emmett goes to the body. Emmett with a couple of leg kicks. Green not really doing much. Nice right hook by Emmett. Nice step through combo as well. Emmett stuffs a shot. Straight right from Green, and a hook. Emmett with another right late. I’ll go 10-9 and 29-28 Emmett.

Irene Aldana vs. Katlyn Chookagian
Round 1 – Both ladies landing kicks early. Chookagain very active with her kicks high and low. Aldana scores with two jabs,but Chookagian lands her own. Chookagian has a takedown attempt stuffed. She manages to get a takedown, but only for a second. More kicks to the inside and outside from Aldana, and she lands a nice counter right. Another. More kicks from both. Chookagian gets a late takedown. Very close, but I’ll go 10-9 Chookagian.
Round 2 – Chookagian with a front kick to keep the aggressive Aldana at bay. Inside leg kick and a left from Aldana. Axe kick attempt from Aldana, and a spinning back fist. They trade inside leg kicks. Aldana still advancing. Nice left from Aldana as Chookagian throws a kick. Two combos from Aldana that end in outside leg kicks. Now she goes inside. Aldana tried to catch a kick and landed a counter right. Aldana stuffs a shot. Beautiful question mark kick from Aldana. Another counter right. Jabs from Chookagian. A couple more outside leg kicks from Chookagian. Nice right hook strafes Chookagian’s face. Aldana stumbed after a Chookagian takedown defense, but she stayed up. She stuffed another one. Jab from Chookagian. Straight right from Aldana. 10-9 Aldana.
Round 3 – Chookagian very active early with kicks. Aldana with a counter straight right. They trade jabs. Chookagian with a front kick but eats an outside leg kick. Jab from Aldana. Two inside leg kicks from Chookagian. Right hook from Aldana and she stuffs a takedown. Aldana cracks her with two lefts. Chookagain fires back with a right hook. Chookagian with a combo. Straight left from Aldan. Now a left hook. More kicks from Chookagian. Nice right hook from Aldana, and another. Front kick from Chookagian. Aldana with a leg kick. Nice combo from Aldana. Chookagian slowing her advances with outside leg kicks. They trade rights. Aldana with a nice uppercut. Right hook. They’re brawling. Chookagian can’t get a takedown. Very good fight. I’ll go 10-9 and 29-28 Aldana.

Magomed Bibulatov vs. Jenel Lausa
Round 1 – Bibulatov with two fancy kicks to the start. Short left hook from Lausa. Bibulatov looked to scoop a single but Lausa fought him off. Bibulatov landed two hard knees though. Inside leg kick for Bibulatov. Bibulatov throwing jabs. The crowd is already getting antsy at the lack of action. Spinning back fist from Bibulatov. Bibulatov scored with a right hook and looked for some pressure, but he landed a knee to the cup. Quick restart. More spinning attacks from Bibulatov. Bibulatov looks for a late takedown, and lands a knee after the horn. 10-9 Bibulatov.
Round 2 – Lausa presses forward with some hands. Left hook blocked. Bibulatov used the cage to push off into a superman punch, then a spinning kick that landed. Very nice uppercut and a knee from Bibulatov. Lausa clinched up. Bibulatov gets away. Spinning kick got caught and Bibulatov almost ended up on his back. Another low shot to Lausa, who is in more pain this time. The Cornuts Cam confirms the kick to the cup. We’re taking an extended break here. John McCarthy takes a point for the second low shot. Bibulatov scooped a single and got a takedown. Lausa looked to reverse and they scrambled, but Bibulatov stayed on top. Bibulatov is trying to trap an arm with his knee, but isn’t able to. He lands a couple of elbows. Bibulatov tried to pass again but is held in check by Lausa’s nice defensive guard. Few punches from Bibulatov. Elbows. 9-9 due to the point deduction.
Round 3 – Side kick and a wheel kick from Bibulatov. They just grazed Lauza. He scoops him up for a big slam. He is working from side, briefly trapping an arm to light him up with forearms. Lausa regained his full guard, but Bibulatov is getting a lot of strikes through now. He moved to mount with 2:25 to go. He wasn’t there long though. Still, Lausa is getting beat up on the ground. Bibulatov opening up late but he wasn’t close to a finish. 10-8 and 29-26 on my card.
