The UFC is targeting the light heavyweight division’s light heavyweight title rematch for UFC 214.
It has been two weeks since Daniel Cormier (19-1) successfully defended his title for the second time against Anthony Johnson at UFC 210. Right after the fight, he immediately directed his attention towards both Jon Jones (22-1) and Jimi Manuwa (17-2).
While Jones is unsurprisingly his main target, Manuwa was placed in the picture in case “Bones” was not ready to face “DC” in July. But by the looks of things, it seems like the UFC will be booking the much-awaited 205-pound title grudge rematch.
Per a report by MMA Fighting on Thursday, multiple sources have claimed that the company is looking to book Cormier-Jones 2 for UFC 214 on July 29th. It has not been made clear, however, if the said fight will be headlining the event, since UFC president Dana Whitehad previously stated that he is no longer confident in having Jones as a headliner.
If the rematch on the aforementioned date does push through, it will be Jones’ first fight since he was pulled off from UFC 200 last July after a failed drug test. They were also scheduled to fight at UFC 197, but Cormier withdrew due to injury. Jones beat Cormier by unanimous decision in the UFC 182 main event in January 2015, then was later stripped of his belt after a hit-and-run collision.
UFC 214 will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
