Former world title challenger Willie Monroe has signed a contract extension with Artie Pelullo’s Banner Promotions, the company announced on Tuesday.
Monroe won the 2014 ESPN Boxcino middleweight tournament and parlayed it into an eventual shot at world titleholder Gennady Golovkin, who knocked him out in the sixth round in May 2015.
Monroe was idle until returning on June 11 to score a 10-round unanimous decision win against John Thompson, a former junior middleweight world title challenger who won the 2015 Boxcino junior middleweight tournament.
“I’m excited to re-sign with Banner Promotions. Artie has been nothing but great to me, and he’ll put me in position to fight against the Danny Jacobs and Canelos [Alvarez] of the boxing world,” Monroe said. “It feels good to have a fresh start over. I am coming off of a huge win on Showtime versus John Thompson, and I now have a great team watching my back with my brother, Trent Monroe, T.J. Nolan and Adrian Clark as my strategic partner.”
Monroe (20-2, 6 KOs), 29, of Rochester, New York, has been a pro since 2008 but gained notoriety during the Boxcino tournament in which he defeated Donatas Bondorovas, Vitally Kopylenko and Brandon Adams.
“We are excited to have Willie back in the fold,” Pelullo said. “Willie has showed not only in the Boxcino tournament, but in his fight against Golovkin, that he is one of the top middleweights in the world. He had a great performance against John Thompson and now he is ready for any challenge in the division.
“We will be actively pursuing all of those opportunities for Willie.”
