Mexican super featherweight Alejandro Valdez (26-7-2, 20 KOs) faces former world title challenger Orlando “El Fenómeno” Cruz (23-4-1, 11 KOs) of Puerto Rico on Friday night at the Kissimmee Civic Center in Kissimmee, Florida. The Boxeo Telemundo Ford main event is scheduled for 10 rounds with Cruz’ WBO NABO super featherweight title on the line. The card is being dedicated to victims of the nearby Pulse Nightclub tragedy.
You’ve had just one fight in the last five years. What was the reason for that?
I took a break for family-related reasons and also to finish my studies.
What did you study?
I studied public accounting and now I am working as an insurance agent.
Do you feel rejuvenated after such a long break from the ring?
Yes I do. I feel much more refreshed and motivated to return to boxing.
So you feel actually like a young 32 years of age?
Honestly I am still young. I don’t have any bad habits or vices. I just work and go to the gym.
Most of your success in your career has come at 118. How are you feeling now at 130?
I feel stronger. I am 5’8, so making 118 was getting difficult for me. I returned last year for one fight at this weight and it went well.
You’re looking to keep fighting at 130?
I want to win on Friday and then look at opportunities at 126 or 130.
Does the fact that you are both left-handed make this a more comfortable style to prepare for?
I don’t think it will matter for either of us. I have sparred with lefties for this fight but at the end of the day, both of us are experienced veteran fighters.
What kind of fight should the fans expect this Friday?
I’m going to give the fans what they want to see. I’m going to win with non-stop pressure from beginning to end.
How excited for you to be on Telemundo for the first time in your career?
I am very content. It’s an opportunity for me to showcase my talent not only in Latin America but the fans in the USA as well.
