Yesterday promoter Kris Lawrence of The Heavyweight Factory announced that Shannon Briggs and Fres Oquendo will fight for the WBA’s vacant ‘regular’ title on June 3rd at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, as reported by ESPN. Anthony Joshua won the WBA’s ‘super’ world title by defeating Wladimir Klitschko this past Saturday.
Briggs, 45, who has been extremely vocal about wanting to earn another title shot, is obviously pleased by the news.
“Being able to fight at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, in front of my hometown fans and right in my backyard, is extremely exciting,” Briggs said. “I’m working very hard right now with some great sparring partners that are pushing me to the limit. Fight night will be a long one for Fres Oquendo.
“I want to dedicate this fight to my children, my family, all of my fans and to all of the people around the world who have suffered from depression. I’m living proof that you can make it. Don’t give up.”
Oqeundo, 44, must also be satisfied with the announcement as the WBA has owed him a title fight even since he won a 2015 court filing against Ruslan Chagaev for attempting to skirt a contracted rematch. Oquendo is 0-3 in world title fights during his career, but says the fourth time is ‘the holy grail and the most special.’
