Three years ago, the National Boxing Hall of Fame was established by Bill and Linda Dempsey Young to honor the “wonderful athletic community and the boxing world that surrounds them.”
Yesterday, to a packed house, 16 people form the community were honored, and two remembered.
What makes this organization stand out, is that they not only recognize world champions, but those boxers who have contributed to the sport with their courage and talent, and are heroes to those around them.
One of the most touching moments was the speeches given by Michael and Leon Spinks, as they stood side-by-side at the microphone. Both Olympians and World Champions, united by blood, love and experience.
Jill Diamond received the Jose SULAIMAN Lifetime Achievement award and spoke of the positive things boxing provides for the community.
After the ceremony, at Stevens Steakhouse, Drewin Young and his band provided wonderful music for those attending to dance to and continue their lively discussions and warm remembrances.
Many people also wore the Green Ribbon to make the beginning of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month.
Thus event is a favorite of the WBC, and has been supported by WBC, President Mauricio SULAIMAN as well as Cleto Reyes and several members of the boxing world.
Everyone had a great time. glasses were raised. numbers exchanged. Friends reunited.
We thank the Young’s for their commitment to Boxing and the community.
