UFC president Dana White is giving it a last-ditch effort to negotiate with Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather to get their boxing match booked.
If you go by UFC president Dana White’s words in recent days, things have taken a turn for the worse as far as booking Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor. White went from thinking there’d be a better chance of him backing Tom Brady up in the Super Bowl than Mayweather-McGregor happening, to changing his stance and saying to Conan O’Brien that he believed it was going to happen.
With media outlets around the world relentlessly covering every possible angle and inkling that this lucrative boxing match could soon become reality, White has expressed his frustration over the way negotiations have gone. Speaking with Jim Rome on CBS Sports Radio, Dana put in a deadline for getting a deal done, or else he’s going to move on.
“I plan on having this thing locked up by this Sunday and then moving on to Team Mayweather and start to negotiate with them,” White told “The Jim Rome Show” on CBS Sports Radio. “If we really do get it done in that timeframe, then this thing could possibly happen. Again, I still have to go negotiate with them. There’s no guarantee that we’re going to come to a deal.”
“I think (the chances of a deal with McGregor) are pretty good,” White said. “Hopefully Monday I’m going to sit down and negotiate with Team Mayweather. I just can’t keep messing with this thing. I have to run my business and I have to focus on all the other things that are going on around here.”
Interestingly enough, White later went on ESPN Radio’s Ryen Russillo Show and didn’t put any blame on Floyd Mayweather for their inability to have everything set for September 16th, a date which now belongs to Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez.
“We dragged our feet, we’ve taken too long, and a great fight [GGG-Canelo] slid into our spot. Life moves on, nobody waits for everything.
“It’s everybody’s fault,” White said. “It’s all of our’s fault — actually it’s not Mayweather’s fault. It’s actually our fault on our side. We haven’t got our stuff together — meaning me and Conor — and we blew the date, so what are you going to do?”
Bloody Elbow will keep you updated on any new developments concerning Mayweather-McGregor, including if the UFC and Dana White will switch to actually having McGregor make a defense of his lightweight title.
