Detroit’s fabled Kronk Gym hosted a workout on Thursday afternoon for Andy Ruiz and several of the local fighters appearing on Saturday’s Detroit Brawl card at the Masonic Temple. In addition to main eventer Ruiz, Demetrius Banks, Dorrell Van Horn Jr, Gheith Karim, Jarico O’Quinn, Zach Shamoun, and Clarence Dubose all went through a light workout for the folks gathered.
Speaking to Fightnews, soft spoken Ruiz was quick to point out that he was not too concerned with opponent’s Josh Gormley’s pre fight KO prediction. “I’m not taking him lightly, one punch can change everything but I’m not a trash talker. I’ll do my talking in the ring with my fists” commented the current world ranked heavyweight contender Ruiz. He also responded to some of the criticism directed his way with regards to his level of opposition. “I’ve been off for 7 months and I’m just getting back in the game so I need to work my way back. I’m 27-0 and I will be hoping for a title shot in the near future after a few more fights.” Ruiz said he was honored to be at the Kronk and to fight in Detroit “where so many great champions fought.” He also hoped “to see my Mexican fans come out on Saturday as I will do my best to give them a good show.”
Fightnews also talked to former amateur standout (2013 USA Boxing National Champ & 2011 Jr Olympic Champ) Jarico O’Quinn. Dmitriy Salita recently signed O’Quinn to a promotional agreement and Salita is high on his new addition. “He’s one of the best prospects, he has the skills and confidence to go far. I’m going to keep him busy and I feel he will be ready for high level competition soon” stated promoter Salita. Certainly not lacking confidence, O’Quinn made a short speech to the crowd thanking them for their attendance and predicting a fast end to his fight on Saturday. Young Jarico told Fightnews, “I’m sharp, I’ve been in the gym even though I haven’t fought since April (first pro fight) of last year. I’m going to stay busy now, I’ll fight anyone and I’m going all the way!”
