Chael Sonnen’s grappling promotion Submission Underground held their fourth event today at the Roseland Theater in Portland, OR, and there were a lot of stars on hand. The main event featured longtime top MMA fighter Jake Shields taking on the brash recent Bellator signee, Dillon Danis. Also on the card was UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber, who was taking on Paulo Miyao, and UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns, who met John Combs.
In the main event, Shields was a 4-1 underdog coming but ended up taking the win in overtime via escape time. Dillon looked to have Shields in a bit of danger with a jumping guillotine attempt in regulation, but Shields escaped. The overtime didn’t settle much, but Shields got the win nonetheless. After the match, a perturbed Danis wouldn’t do an interview and left.
Faber’s SUG debut came against Paulo Miyao, who was recently suspended for two years by USADA following a failed drug test at the 2016 IBJJF World Championships. The two engaged in a very entertaining contest that ended up going the full three overtimes, but Miyao was able to pull out the win via escape time. One thing of note was that Faber weighed in at 161 pounds for the bout – it seems that retirement has been good to him.
In the other main card match featuring a UFC talent, Gilbert Burns picked up a nice rear naked choke submission win over John Combs in the first overtime after controlling the bout in regulation.
Here are the full results from the main card:
Jake Shields defeated Dillon Danis in OT (escape time)
Paulo Miyao defeated Urijah Faber in OT (escape time)
Nathan Orchard defeated Michael Perez in OT (escape time)
Gilbert Burns defeated John Combs in first OT (rear naked choke)
