A preview of Saturday’s Invicta FC 23 fight card in Kansas City, headlined by flyweights Vanessa Porto and Agnieszka Niedźwiedź.
Invicta FC marches on with the reliable formula of setting an event for every other month, and it’s yet another well-matched card from top to bottom. Despite not having a title fight in the main event, every fight has either divisional relevance or the possibility for heavy action – or both.
Headlining the card will be former Invicta interim flyweight title challenger Vanessa Porto, coming off a loss in a fantastic fight against Jennifer Maia last year. Porto’s athleticism and hard-nosed approach has led to some exciting performances against very durable opponents. This time around, she’ll be facing undefeated Polish prospect Agnieszka Niedzwiedz, who brings a good boxing game, great takedown defense and a great consistent pace. You can also learn a bit more about her in this excellent interview with BE’s Tim Bissell. The winner of this bout could very well be the next in line to take on Maia for the belt.
The second fight from the top features veterans Sarah D’Alelio taking on fan-favorite Roxanne Modafferi. Modafferi also lost to Jennifer Maia in September of last year but rebounded with a submission win over Priscila de Souza last month. D’Alelio is on a five-fight win streak including a submission win over Invicta mainstay Andrea Lee (also on this card) as well as Jenny Liou Shriver. After a fight in Bellator and another in Primal FC (owned by former UFC fighter Mike Swick), she’s hit her stride and worked her ground game to great effect. This should be an interesting stylistic matchup given D’Alelio’s heavier style and Modafferi’s newfound sense of timing with strikes as well as her improved movement.
Tessa Simpson will be taking on former atomweight champion Herica Tiburcio, with both of them coming off wins over Simona Soukupova. Former UFC talents Kelly Faszholz and Elizabeth Phillips will be on the card, with this being the first fight for Faszholz after her departure from the UFC. Phillips suffered a brutal loss at the hands of Leah Letson at Invicta FC 21 but rebounded in a unanimous decision win against Sarah Howell in February.
Team Oyama product Liz Tracy will be facing the aforementioned Andrea Lee, with both fighters currently riding a two-fight win streak. Kickboxing sensation Tiffany van Soest faces hard-hitter Christine Ferea while durable kickboxer and BJJ purple belt Pam Sorensontakes on hard-hitting and savvy veteran Ediane Gomes.
Full card is as follows:
Vanessa Porto (18-7) vs Agnieszka Niedźwiedź (9-0)
Roxanne Modafferi (20-13) vs Sarah D’Alelio (11-6)
Herica Tiburcio (10-4) vs Tessa Simpson (5-1)
