In a thriller at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo, Japan`s Ken Shiro defeated Mexican Ganigan “Maravilla” López by majority decision with scores of 114-114, 115-113 and 115-113.
It was a very close fight from the start. Ganigan showed his solid boxing skills but Shiro, who effectively stayed out of range was lustily supported by home fans, and marginally had the better performance.
After eight rounds, Ganigan was down on the 3 cards by 77-75, so he had to push to win. Although he offered exciting exchanges of punches, it was never quite enough. Shiro is crowned the new World Boxing Council light flyweight champion.
