26-year-old IBF junior middleweight titlist Jarrett Hurd (20-0, 14 KOs) will get a stiffer first title defense than expected as he’s reportedly reached a deal to take on veteran Austin Trout (30-3, 17 KOs) this summer, according to RingTV.
Hurd is coming off a stoppage win over Tony Harrison in February where he claimed his first world title, stopping Harrison in nine rounds. Trout, 31, is most recently coming off a close decision loss to Jermall Charlo this time last year and hasn’t fought since. Trout does, however, have more experience against better competition, having fought the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Erislandy Lara, and Miguel Cotto in recent years.
The fight between Hurd and Trout was originally slated for a July 15 PBC on FOX card but organizers are looking to move it to a new date in the summer, which also necessitates a new venue and television network.
This looks to be yet another legitimately competitive match-up in a year that has already featured a number of great fights in the first half. Let the good times roll…
