Union City, NJ — It is with heavy hearts that we write of the passing of Ardash Sahaghian, our dear elder, champion, and the Originator of the Modern Boxing Belt.
Ardash was deeply loved and cared for until the tender age of 95, when he left this Earth with a legacy more far reaching than he could have ever imagined. He was known to boxing fans as the master craftsman of the iconic championship belts, a craft that synthsized his skills as a jeweler and leatherworker. He was known to us, the loyal carriers of his legacy, as a highly talented and resourceful innovator, whose brilliance in skill came second only to his brilliance in character.
Ardash Sahaghian was an exceptional human being and his legacy will keep inspiring honor, dignity, and humility. He is survived by his wife, Nazeli Sahaghian; daughter, Eliz Sahaghian; grandson, Edward Sahaghian-Majian; Hasmig Tatiossian and the vibrant team of craftspeople who carry on his work at SARTONK.
We welcome all who knew Ardash to join us in celebrating his life as we lay him to rest. The wake will take place Thursday, June 8 at 6:30 pm at Holy Cross Armenian Church. The traditional Armenian Church service lasts an hour. We’ll meet at the same church Friday morning at 10:00 am for the service, and will then proceed to Grove Church Cemetery for the burial.
