WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson says he wants all titles in his weight class, and that he needs the winner of Kovalev-Ward.
It’s been a little while since we’ve seen or heard from the lineal light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, but with a fight against Thomas Williams Jr. on the horizon, Stevenson is looking forward to some big things — at least so he says. Specifically, during a recent conference call captured by RingTV.com, Stevenson says he needs a shot at the winner of Sergey Kovalev-Andre Ward, tentatively scheduled for this November.
“Of course I need the winner of that fight,” Stevenson said in conference call on Monday. “Anyways, I’m the lineal champion. I need all the titles. I’m the lineal champion, so they’re fighting together but nobody (can say they’re the best) because I’m the lineal champion and everybody knows. I need all the titles.”
Stevenson wouldn’t make a prediction on who he thinks would win between Kovalev and Ward, but he did say he’s not exactly sold that Kovalev-Ward is a real thing at this moment in time.
“First of all, we will see if they will fight and if it’s true or not,” Stevenson said. “If the fight’s going to happen — we don’t know that. It’s for November but you don’t know if the fight is going to happen because Andre Ward has a fight on Aug. 6 so we’ll see after that. So for now I can’t predict nothing because it’s not for real.”
Personally, it’s a little difficult for me to take Stevenson all that seriously after his last spectacle in the ring, but he is a world titlist and he is making some noise so…take it for whatever it’s worth.
