Frankie Gomez is said to be back in the gym and looking for a big fight this Fall.
Frankie Gomez’s career trajectory is about as easy to predict as the stock market, but he and his Golden Boy promoter are looking to stabilize things and get him back in this ring this Fall. Eric Gomez of Golden Boy (no relation to Frankie)tells RingTV.com that they’re done coddling Gomez and that it’s time to throw him into the deep waters where they’ll target all big names from 140-147lbs.
“With Frankie, it’s time,” said Eric Gomez. “So we want to try to give him a big fight. He’s ready to go after any of the top fighters. If any of the top fighters are available, then we’ll put him in with one of the top names.”
Gomez (21-0, 13 KOs), widely considered one of the very best prospects in the sport, looks like he’s officially graduated from prospect to legitimate contender now, but keeping him on the straight and narrow has proven to be a little difficult for his handlers. He’s had some issues making weight for fights, and making his way to the gym in general, but there’s no doubt about his talent. Unfortunately rumors continue to persist that he’s been largely absent from the Wild Card gym where he trains with Freddie Roach since beating Mauricio Herrera back in May.
So despite Eric Gomez saying that Frankie has been dealing with some personal issues and training by himself, he says he’s now back in the gym and ready to roll. But when asked about Frankie’s commitment to boxing, Eric replied:
“I can’t predict anything but he’s back in the gym and he’s training,” Gomez said. “He looked very good in his last fight. It was somewhat of a test, facing Mauricio Herrera. Mauricio gave him a tough fight, but the kid gutted it out and he won. We’ll give him a date and set up his next match and go from there.”
Who would you like to see Gomez take on next? Is he ready to challenge for a world title?
