Just like that, Jose Aldo will get another crack at the UFC featherweight title sooner than expected.
Max Holloway vs. Jose Aldo 2 is the new UFC 218 main event, MMA Fighting has learned. Aldo replaces Frankie Edgar, who was forced to withdraw from the fight earlier this week due to injury.
Aldo, who lost the featherweight title to Holloway in June via third-round TKO, is considered the most decorated featherweight champion in MMA history. He was scheduled to meet Ricardo Lamas at UFC on 26 on Dec. 16 — his first non-title fight since 2009 — and now it’s unclear at this time what the promotion will do with Lamas.
Holloway (18-3) has won his last 11 fights in a row.
The event, which will mark the UFC’s first at the new Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, will also feature Alistair Overeem vs. Francis Ngannou, Eddie Alvarez vs. Justin Gaethje, Henry Cejudo vs. Sergio Pettis and Tecia Torres vs. Michelle Waterson on the pay-per-view main card.
