MANILA, Philippines — Filipino fighter Markquil “Gunz” Salvana suffered a first round technical knockout against another twin Andrew Maloney in just 1:56 of the first round of their 6-rounder fight held August 3 at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne, Victoria, August in Australia.
The 19-year old Salvana still fought despite suffering a high fever three days before the fight according to his manager Jim Claude Manangquil, chief executive officer of Sanman Promotion.
“I told him not to let himself be badly hurt and to avoid further damage. We can’t do anything already and we were unlucky,” said Managquil.
Salvana, a native of Cagayan de Oro City, suffered only his second loss against 11 wins with 5 knockouts and no draw, while Maloney, current WBA Oceania bantamweight champion, had remained unbeaten with nine straight wins and five knockouts.
Salvana, an OPBF no. 9 super bantamweight contender, also earlier bowed to Maloney’s twin brother Jason by retirement in the 5th round in their battle for the vacant WBA Oceania super bantamweight crown held December 18 at the Town Hall in Malvern, Victoria.
