A rematch between Ronaldo Souza and Derek Brunson will headline UFC on FOX 27 in Charlotte, NC, on Jan. 27, MMA Fighting confirmed with sources following a report by ESPN.
Souza (24-5, 1 no-contest) defeated Brunson (18-5) when they met for the first time inside the Strikeforce cage in 2012, scoring a 41-second knockout in San Diego. The Brazilian signed with the UFC the next year, and went on to win seven of his next nine fights.
“Jacare”, who hasn’t competed since a second-round knockout defeat to future UFC interim champion Robert Whittaker in April, was trying to get the Brunson fight a week later in Brazil, at UFC Belem on Feb. 3, but the company decided to book it for North Carolina.
Brunson competed outside of the United States in three of his last four UFC fights, including his recent first-round knockouts over Daniel Kelly in New Zealand and Lyoto Machida in Brazil.
