A pivotal strawweight bout that might determine the division’s next title challenger is headed to Orlando.
Jessica Andrade and Tecia Torres are set to meet at UFC on FOX 28 early next year, Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday. UFC officials have not yet announced the matchup.
Most recently, Andrade (17-6) picked up the biggest win of her career, a decision over former title challenger Claudia Gadelha at Japan’s UFC Fight Night 117 in September. Since moving to 115 pounds in 2016, the 26-year-old Brazilian has gone 4-1, her only loss being a title bid against Joanna Jedrzejczyk this past May.
Before the Torres announcement, Andrade was briefly linked to a fight opposite fellow top contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz on the same card. It is unclear at this time why that fight was scrapped.
Torres (10-1) is currently riding a three-fight winning streak. In her last bout, “The Tiny Tornado” defeated Michelle Waterson by decision at UFC 218 earlier this month. Prior to that, she picked up the first stoppage of her career, a submission over Juliana Lima. Torres’ only official loss was a competitive decision against current champ Rose Namajunas in April 2016. Torres is 1-1 against “Thug,” whom she beat in Invicta FC in 2013.
UFC on FOX 28 takes place at Amway Center on Feb. 24. A main event has not yet been confirmed for the card.
