Former world champion Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito (40-8, 27 KOs) scored a ten round split decision over Ramon “Inocente” Alvarez (23-5-2, 15 KOs) to claim the WBO Continental super welterweight title on Saturday night at the Baja California Center in Playas de Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico.
After a slow start, Margarito’s pressure started paying dividends. Alvarez’ punches had little effect as Margarito walked him down. Alvarez was down round eight, but rallied bravely in the final round. Scores were 97-92, 97-92 Margarito, 95-94 for Alvarez.
Alvarez’ brother “Canelo” Alvarez was at ringside. Will this fight set up a Klitschko-style “revenge of the brother” showdown?
In the co-feature, unbeaten super lightweight Pedro “La Roca” Campa (22-0, 18 KOs) scored a seventh round TKO over David “Orly” Bency (17-6-1, 10 KOs). The bout was waved off to save Bency from further punishment. Time was :55.
