GEORGE Kambosos isn’t wasting any time as he works his way into world title contention.
The 24-year-old has signed to faced WBA #11 rated lightweight Tony Luis in a high-stakes regional title unification that has the potential to cause movement within the stacked lightweight division.
Kambosos (13-0, 8 KOs) will attempt to wrestle the WBA NABA lightweight strap from the well-traveled Luis (25-3, 8 KOs) on Wednesday April 11th at Quaycentre in Sydney’s Olympic Park precinct. The undefeated Sydney resident will make the second defence of the WBA Oceania lightweight bauble that he earned by impressively outscoring Brandon Ogilvie in a career-best effort in 2016.
The Ontario-based Luis is best known for his competitive albeit short-notice effort against English livewire Derry Mathews, who outscored the Canadian for the interim WBA lightweight title in 2015. Ironically, Luis hasn’t lost since while compiling a six-fight win streak, leading to the opportunity against Kambosos. Further to this, Luis has an imposing record against unbeaten fighters, winning three of his four attempts to mark the first blemish on an opponents record.
“I am not coming to Australia to make friends, I’m coming to make fans,” said Luis in a press release issued by his management. “He’ll teach me how to box? Cool. I’ll teach him how to fight. I’m not concerned with winning or losing. I’m coming to break something. He’s going to remember me for the rest of his life.”
“I’m ready to carry Australian boxing on my shoulders,” added Kambosos. “I truly believe I am the best fighter in Australia and I ain’t talking about just boxing, I’m talking every combat and when I destroy and end Luis and take that prestigious NABA belt off him, I will prove how dangerous I am in the world of boxing.”
“I believe fighting high level guys like Luis is vital – just like I went to another level when outclassed Ogilvie – and then went to an even bigger level when I destroyed Balla. This fight will take me a level that no one has seen before and when I take Luis out, I’ll be gunning for Linares title.“
