Caleb Plant faced a step up in opponent quality tonight on FOX, and came through with flying colors with a 12-round decision win over veteran Rogelio “Porky” Medina.
Plant (17-0, 10 KO) won on scores of . BLH scored it 118-110 for Plant.
Medina (38-9, 32 KO) didn’t really seem quite like himself in this fight. There’s speculation that his missing weight on Friday had him dehydrated and out of shape, and that his left knee, which had a brace, was bothering him during the fight. But he wasn’t able to unleash punches in bunches like he usually does, and at least part of that has to be credit to Plant’s slickness, too.
Medina, according to the TV broadcast, came in averaging 90 punches per round, and in this fight threw just 34 per round. He was nothing like the relentless fighter we saw against James DeGale or David Benavidez.
On that note, Plant’s team might want another fight around this level before stepping into the ring with the top fighters at 168, especially since most of them are busy right now. But the win does put Plant into the No. 2 contender slot with the IBF, whose title is currently held by Caleb Truax, who likely will rematch James DeGale next.
