Canelo vs. Golovkin LA fan event quotes

Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez had Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) furious Tuesday tonight with his trash talking at the half empty face to face fan event at Microsoft Square in Los Angeles, California.

This is the only media event the Caneo vs. Golovkin fight will have to hype their May 5th rematch on HBO pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The press conference seemed to be thrown together in a casual way. There wasn’t a lot of boxing fans that showed up for some reason. Was this because of how badly the first Canelo vs. Golovkin fight ended with it being scored a controversial 12 round draw? Having the LA Fan event so early with the fight being over 2 months away wasn’t the smartest idea.

Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions opted not to have a press tour to attract interest in the rematch, which may prove to be a mistake.

Sanchez stole the show with his pointed comments made about Canelo and his running from Golovkin in the first fight. Sanchez tore into Canelo when it was his turn to speak. Sanchez reminded the boxing fans that Golovkin was the winner of the fight. When Sanchez told Canelo that he hopes he doesn’t run from GGG, it angered the Golden Boy star, causing him to start firing back comments rapid fire in Spanish at Sanchez. It was hilarious. Canelo was turning red in the face and he clearly lost his composure.

Instead of taking the high road like Golovkin and conducting himself in a low-key manner, Canelo repeatedly said that he’s going to knock him out. Canelo looked angry and bitter.

A good portion of the boxing fans in attendance at the half empty fan event were Golovkin’s fans. That was surprising because they had Mexican flags and they were wearing Golovkin caps. That probably didn’t make Canelo too happy. Golovkin is so popular that he’s able to attract a lot of Mexican fans to support him.

“Everybody knows who won he first fight,” Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez said. “I’m convinced he’ll (Canelo) will get stopped if he makes it a fight where they test each other instead of backpedaling. The guys tell him to stop running, and that’s exactly what he did in the first fight,” Sanchez.

It was at this point that Canelo got angry at Sanchez and started hurling comments back at him. Sanchez was smiling gleefully at how angry Canelo had gotten. You could tell that Sanchez was enjoying. If they didn’t cut Sanchez off, he would have had Canelo foaming at the mouth with anger. It’s too bad Sanchez wasn’t allowed to keep talking because he was the only one that had any charisma. Tonight was Sanchez’s show. He could have stood up and told jokes and he would have had the fans laughing.

Instead of keeping focused on the May 5th fight, Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya was droning on about useless stuff about his career, and how he should have fought Felix Trinidad a second time. This talk about Trinidad likely went over the heads of the young fans, which weren’t around when De La Hoy fought the Puerto Rican fighter eons ago. De La Hoya was wasting valuable time during the Canelo-GGG media event talking about his career. It was the wrong place and the wrong time for De La Hoya to be talking about his own career.

“I thought he won 7 rounds to 5,” De La Hoya said about Canelo in talking about how he thought he deserved a win over GGG in the first fight. “I know some people saw it as a draw. I asked Canelo after the fight if Golovkin hits hard, and he said, ‘No.’”

The boxing public saw Golovkin winning the fight, so it’s immaterial what De La Hoya thought about the first fight. The judges scored the fight a draw. HBO’s unofficial ringside scorer Harold Lederman scored the fight for Golovkin 8 rounds to 4, and the press row had him winning as well. The assigned Nevada State Athletic judges that worked the fight had it a 12 round draw. That’s all that counts.

“He has good power, but not out of this world,” Canelo said of GGG. “I’ll fight him anywhere. I’m not afraid. I’m going to knock him out. Without a doubt I thought I won the first fight. Thank God, we’ll have a second fight. The second fight will erase all doubts when I win,” Canelo said.

One of the questions that Canelo was asked is why he wouldn’t fight Golovkin in New York. Canelo insisted on the rematch taking place in Las Vegas. He didn’t want to fight Golovkin in New York where he and his promoter Tom Loeffler were hoping to have the second fight staged.

Canelo said he would fight Canelo anywhere. He then made some remark about parrots having the same color wherever they are. It was a strange remark, because it didn’t explain why he didn’t agree to fight Golovkin in New York. Making Golovkin go back to Las Vegas, where he many boxing fans believe he was robbed last September, is like asking him to go back to the ‘scene of the crime.’ That’s how Golovkin sees it.

Canelo was on the move so much in the first fight with Triple G that he didn’t have time to throw shots. Canelo was always on the move. If Canelo had stood and fought Golovkin, then he would have had to deal with a lot more heavy shots. It looked like Canelo was afraid to fight GGG.

“I believe in my power. I believe in my strategy. We have next fight, new ideas,”Golovkin said.
Golovkin was being classy each time he was asked questions. He opted not to give a prediction when he was asked what round he would knock Canelo out. Golovkin said, “I’m not God.”

“If his fighter doesn’t know how to cut off the ring, it’s not our fault,” Canelo’s trainer Chepo Reynoso said about Golovkin.

Chepo’s comment about Golovkin not being able to cut off the ring was a defense at Canelo being called a runner. It obviously bothers Chepo that Canelo was booed and called a runner by boxing fans for the way he fought last September. Blaming it on Golovkin for him not being able to chase his fighter down is a poor defense. It would have sounded better if Chepo had admitted that Canelo ran from Golovkin, and that he’ll make sure he doesn’t run in the rematch so he doesn’t ruin the fight for the boxing fans.

“This fight I’m approaching it as it is the 13th round, a new fight and if I was the better fighter. We want the knockout to leave no doubt. We both want to win convincingly,” Canelo said. “I felt comfortable the first fight 160 and I will be more comfortable the second fight. I did hurt him with a right to the temple but he never hurt me. We have to risk more in this fight.”

Golovkin was never hurt. Canelo is dreaming. If he had been hurt, Canelo would have tried to knock him out, but that obviously never happened. With the way Canelo was tiring out after throwing 5 or 6 punches, I don’t think he could knockout Golovkin even if he hurt him. Canelo would take a long 2 minute break after he’d throw a handful of punches in the first minute of each round. I’ve never seen a middleweight with such terrible stamina as Canelo. Seeing Canelo turn red in the face when Sanchez was trash talking him, I don’t think he can handle a fight where he has stand and throw punches more a full 3 minutes the way he would need to for him to have a chance of knocking out Triple G.

“We will look into training in the night altitude for camp by any disciplined fighter will be well prepared training anywhere sea leaves or high altitude,” Canelo’s trainer Eddie Reynoso said.
