Great Britain’s Nicola Adams made it two-for-two at the Olympic Games.
Women’s boxing was only introduced to the Olympics in 2012, and it’s no question who the greatest women’s flyweight in Olympic history is thus far, as Nicola Adams of Great Britain won her second straight gold medal today, defeating Sarah Ourahmoune of France.
Adams, 33, didn’t face a whole lot of adversity in Rio. After a first round bye, she defeated Ukraine’s Tetyana Kob in the quarterfinal, and then old rival Cancan Ren of China in the semifinal. Adams had beaten Ren for gold in London.
Ourahmoune, 34, is herself a veteran, and had a strong run into the final. She beat Morocco’s Zohra Ez-Zahraoui in the first round, then upset second-seeded Zhaina Shekerbekova of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals. Ingrit Valencia of Colombia fell next, but Adams proved a bit too much. It’s been reported that Ourahmoune will retire from boxing, and had planned to do so after the Rio Olympics, no matter the outcome.
The question now for Adams is whether she’ll be back again in 2020 to go for a third gold medal in Tokyo. She’ll be 37 at that time, but thus far has given no indication that she’s looking to retire from the sport.
